hifi

Casual audio quality

Hifi, often styled hi-fi, is short for high fidelity—audio equipment designed to reproduce sound with minimal distortion: an old hifi system from the seventies.

The term emerged in the mid-twentieth century to distinguish quality home audio from tinny radios and gramophones.

As an adjective, it describes superior sound reproduction: hifi speakers, hifi headphones.
