nearfield
Adjacent electromagnetic region
Nearfield describes the region immediately surrounding a source of sound, light, or electromagnetic radiation—close enough that the signal hasn't yet formed the stable wave patterns it will have at greater distances.
In audio, nearfield monitors are speakers designed to be listened to at close range, typically on a desk: Nearfield monitors give you a more accurate mix.
The term contrasts with farfield, where waves have fully developed.
