decamping

Quickly packing up

Decamping is the act of leaving a place, often suddenly or secretly.

The word comes from breaking camp—packing up tents and moving on—but now applies broadly to any departure, especially one that's hasty or unannounced.

After the scandal broke, several board members began decamping for other organizations.

It can suggest either a tactical retreat or simply moving on to somewhere new.
