heatshield

Spacecraft's thermal protection

A heatshield is a protective barrier designed to absorb or deflect intense heat.

Spacecraft use heatshields to survive the extreme temperatures of atmospheric reentry: The capsule's heatshield glowed white-hot as it descended.

The term extends to protective components on vehicles, furnaces, and industrial equipment that guard against thermal damage.
