heat shields
Spacecraft thermal barriers
Heat shields are protective barriers designed to absorb or deflect intense heat, especially during spacecraft reentry into Earth's atmosphere.
The term extends to any thermal protection: The heat shield on a race car protects the driver from engine heat.
Vehicles returning from space require heat shields to survive friction temperatures that would otherwise incinerate them.
