heat-seeker
Infrared-guided munition
A heat-seeker is a missile that tracks targets by their thermal emissions, locking onto the heat signature of aircraft engines or other hot objects.
The term extends to anything that homes in on warmth—a cat finding the sunniest spot, or a person gravitating toward tropical climates.
Figuratively, a heat-seeker pursues whatever is hottest: the trendiest party, the most attractive person in the room, the center of attention.
