head fakes
Misleading directional movements
A head fake is a deceptive movement where someone moves their head one direction to suggest they're going that way, then goes another.
The term comes from basketball and other sports, where faking out defenders is essential.
It extends to any misleading signal of intent: The company's announcement was just a head fake to distract from the layoffs.
To head fake is to make such a move.
