look off

Turn eyes away

Look off means to direct one's gaze away from something, often deliberately.

In sports, especially football, a quarterback looks off defenders by glancing away from the intended receiver to mislead coverage: He looked off the safety before throwing to the tight end.

More generally, to look off is simply to turn one's attention elsewhere: She looked off toward the horizon.
