mad hatter

Deranged felt worker

A mad hatter is an eccentric or crazy person.

The phrase comes from Lewis Carroll's character in *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland*, though hatters' reputation for mental instability predated the book—mercury used in hat-making caused neurological damage.

Now the term describes anyone wildly eccentric: He's a complete mad hatter, always scheming up impossible projects.
