Hatcheck refers to the service or area where patrons check their hats and coats at restaurants, theaters, or nightclubs: the hatcheck counter, hatcheck girl.
The term evokes mid-twentieth-century America, when men routinely wore hats and establishments provided attended cloak rooms.
Now largely historical, though upscale venues may still offer coat check services.
