happy gas

Dentist's calming inhalant

Happy gas is an informal term for nitrous oxide, a colorless gas used as a mild anesthetic and sedative, especially in dental procedures.

The name reflects the euphoria and giddiness patients often experience when inhaling it: The dentist gave me happy gas before pulling the tooth.

Also called laughing gas.
