hair powder

Wig whitening agent

Hair powder is a fine powder, typically made from starch or flour and often scented, that was dusted onto wigs or natural hair.

It was fashionable in 18th-century Europe, giving wigs their characteristic white or grayish appearance and absorbing oils.

The practice declined after governments began taxing hair powder in the 1790s.

Modern hair powders are dry shampoo–like products that absorb grease and add volume between washes.
