grubstaking
Backing a miner
Grubstaking is financing a prospector or entrepreneur in exchange for a share of any profits.
The term comes from mining—a grubstaker provided "grub" (food) and supplies to someone searching for gold or minerals, with both parties splitting whatever was found.
The practice extends to any speculative venture where one party funds another's efforts: He grubstaked several tech startups in the nineties.
