gritting

Spreading road salt

Gritting is the process of spreading grit—coarse sand or salt—on roads and pavements to prevent ice formation or improve traction in winter conditions.

In British English, gritting trucks spread this material before or during freezing weather.

Gritting also describes the action of clenching teeth together tightly, as in gritting your teeth through pain or difficulty.
