greenheads

Marsh fly pests

Greenheads are biting flies with iridescent green eyes, common in coastal salt marshes and wetlands during summer months.

They're aggressive blood-feeders whose painful bites make beach outings miserable: The greenheads were so bad we had to leave.

The term also refers to male mallard ducks, which have distinctive green heads.
