A government department is a major division of the executive branch responsible for a specific area of public administration: the Department of Defense, the Department of Health.
In the UK, these are often called ministries.
Each is typically headed by a cabinet-level official—a secretary in the US, a minister in parliamentary systems.
She works for the agriculture department.
