quango

Taxpayer-funded advisory board

A quango is a semi-public administrative body funded by government but operating with some independence from it—quasi-autonomous non-governmental organization.

The term is chiefly British and often carries a note of skepticism about bureaucratic bloat: The report recommended abolishing several quangos to cut costs.

Critics use it to suggest unelected officials wielding public power without accountability.
