good shepherd
Devoted flock keeper
Good shepherd is a Christian epithet for Jesus Christ, drawn from the Gospel of John where Jesus describes himself as one who lays down his life for his sheep.
The image contrasts with a hired hand who abandons the flock when danger comes.
By extension, a good shepherd is anyone who cares devotedly for those in their charge: The principal saw herself as a good shepherd to her students.
