goldbricks

Dodges assigned duties

Goldbricks are things that appear valuable but turn out to be worthless—from the con of selling gold-plated lead as solid gold.

A goldbrick is also a person who shirks work while appearing busy, and the verb means to loaf or malinger: He spent the afternoon goldbricking instead of finishing the report.

The military sense—a soldier who avoids duty—remains the most common.
