gold foil
Thin yellow metal
Gold foil is gold that has been beaten or rolled into extremely thin sheets, thicker than gold leaf but still quite delicate.
It is used in gilding, decorative arts, and crafts where a more substantial gold covering is needed than leaf provides.
In scientific contexts, gold foil is famous from Rutherford's 1911 experiment, in which alpha particles fired at gold foil revealed the structure of the atom.
