aurum

Caesar's precious element

Aurum is the Latin word for gold, surviving in English primarily as the source of gold's chemical symbol Au.

The word appears in scientific nomenclature and occasionally in literary or formal contexts where a classical flavor is desired: aurum potabile (drinkable gold, an alchemical preparation).

Outside chemistry and deliberate Latinisms, aurum is rarely encountered.
