going west

Traveling toward sunset

Going west is a euphemism for dying, from the association of sunset and the western horizon with endings and death.

The phrase appears in various forms: He's going west, She went west last Tuesday.

In British slang, particularly from World War I, it described soldiers killed in action.

Something that goes west may also be ruined or lost: My plans for the weekend went west.
