gnomic poetry
Wisdom in stanzas
Gnomic poetry consists of short, pithy verses expressing general truths or moral wisdom.
The form originated in ancient Greek and Anglo-Saxon literature, where poets compressed observations about life into memorable maxims: Know thyself, Nothing in excess.
The adjective gnomic describes any utterance that sounds like a proverb—compact, authoritative, sometimes obscure in its brevity.
