dramatic poetry
Theater in meter
Dramatic poetry is verse written for performance, in which characters speak in their own voices rather than through a narrator.
The form encompasses stage plays in verse—Greek tragedy, Shakespearean drama—as well as dramatic monologues, where a single speaker addresses an implied audience: Browning's "My Last Duchess" is a masterpiece of dramatic poetry.
The dramatic element lies in voiced perspective, not mere intensity of emotion.
