genetic conditions
DNA-based health issues
Genetic conditions are disorders caused by abnormalities in a person's DNA—mutations inherited from parents or arising spontaneously.
They range from single-gene disorders like cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia to chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome.
Some genetic conditions manifest at birth, others emerge later in life: Huntington's disease is a genetic condition that typically appears in middle age.
The term is often preferred over "genetic diseases" as more neutral, acknowledging that some conditions are simply variations rather than illnesses.
