gender policing
Enforcing behavioral norms
Gender policing is enforcing traditional gender norms by criticizing or punishing behavior seen as inappropriate for someone's sex.
A boy told not to cry, a girl mocked for being too aggressive, a man ridiculed for carrying a purse—all face gender policing.
The term is usually critical, implying the enforcement is oppressive: She called out her uncle's gender policing when he told her son to stop playing with dolls.
