catcalling

Unwanted verbal attention

Catcalling is shouting sexually suggestive comments at strangers in public, typically men directing remarks at women passing on the street: She couldn't walk two blocks without catcalling.

The term evokes the jarring, attention-seeking quality of a cat's yowl.

Though sometimes framed as complimentary, catcalling is widely regarded as harassment.
