garderobe

Medieval wall latrine

A garderobe is a medieval toilet—a small chamber built into castle walls with a seat over a shaft that dropped waste into a moat or pit below.

The word also meant a private room for storing clothes, from which modern *wardrobe* descends.

The clothing sense arose because the ammonia from the adjacent privy helped keep moths away from stored garments.
