freshman courses

First-year college classes

Freshman courses are introductory-level classes typically taken during the first year of college or university.

They cover foundational material in a subject and often fulfill general education requirements: I'm still finishing up my freshman courses before I can declare a major.

The term sometimes appears as a modifier for any entry-level academic work, regardless of the student's actual year.
