prereqs

Courses needed first

Prereqs is an informal clipping of prerequisites, referring to courses, requirements, or conditions that must be completed before advancing to something else.

The term appears most often in academic contexts, where students discuss the classes they need before taking upper-level courses: I still have two prereqs to finish before I can declare my major.

It also applies more broadly to any necessary groundwork: Getting the prereqs out of the way made the project launch smoother.
