first year
College starting period
First year refers to the initial twelve months of something—a job, a program, a relationship: In my first year of teaching, I made every mistake possible.
In British and some Commonwealth universities, a first year (or first-year) is a student in their initial year of study, equivalent to American "freshman." The term works as both noun and adjective: first-year students, the challenges of first year.
