A freewheeler is someone who lives without following conventional rules or obligations—acting spontaneously and independently rather than according to others' expectations.
The term derives from the freewheel mechanism that allows a bicycle or vehicle to coast without pedaling or engaging the engine: He's always been a freewheeler, never staying in one job or city for long.
