free balloon
Drifting inflated craft
A free balloon is a balloon that drifts with the wind rather than being tethered or powered.
Unlike hot air balloons with burners for altitude control or gas balloons that can valve off lift gas, a true free balloon has no propulsion and goes wherever air currents take it.
The term distinguishes untethered flight from captive balloons held by ropes: The free balloon drifted silently over the countryside.
