fork lightning

Sky's jagged discharge

Fork lightning is lightning that appears as a branching, jagged line across the sky, dividing into multiple paths like the tines of a fork.

This is the most commonly depicted form of lightning, as opposed to sheet lightning, which illuminates clouds without a visible bolt: Fork lightning split the sky over the mountains.
