forcefields

Energy-based protective barriers

Forcefields are invisible barriers of energy in science fiction, used to block weapons, contain atmospheres, or protect spacecraft and installations: The ship's forcefields held against the attack.

The concept has no basis in current physics but appears throughout the genre.

Figuratively, someone might put up a forcefield to keep others at emotional distance.

Also spelled as two words: force fields.
