food pyramid

Dietary guideline chart

A food pyramid is a triangular diagram showing recommended proportions of different food groups in a healthy diet, with foods to eat most (grains, vegetables) at the wide base and those to limit (fats, sweets) at the narrow top.

The U.S. government popularized this visual in 1992, though it has since been revised and replaced.

In ecology, a food pyramid illustrates energy transfer through trophic levels, with producers at the bottom supporting progressively fewer consumers above.
