boilerplating

Reusing stock language

Boilerplating is the practice of reusing standardized language or content across multiple documents, contracts, or communications.

The term comes from the printing industry's metal plates that reproduced the same text repeatedly.

In legal and business contexts, boilerplating saves time but can result in generic or ill-fitting language: The lawyer was just boilerplating the contract without considering our specific needs.

It can also describe any formulaic, copy-paste approach to work.
