five and dime

Old budget store

A five and dime is a variety store selling inexpensive merchandise—originally items costing five or ten cents.

The term is nostalgic now, evoking mid-twentieth-century Main Street retail before discount chains and big-box stores took over: We used to get candy at the five and dime on the corner.

Also called a five-and-ten or dime store.
