end stage
Last critical period
End stage describes the final phase of a progressive disease or condition, when deterioration is irreversible and death is typically imminent: end-stage renal failure, end-stage cancer.
The term appears almost exclusively in medical contexts.
Outside medicine, it occasionally describes any process nearing its terminal point: the end stage of a dying empire.
