firestop

Penetration seal system

A firestop is a barrier or seal designed to prevent fire and smoke from spreading through openings in walls, floors, or ceilings—particularly where pipes, cables, or ducts penetrate fire-rated assemblies.

Building codes require firestops at penetrations to maintain a structure's fire resistance rating.

The term also functions as a verb: The contractor firestopped all the cable runs before inspection.
