firebacks

Cast iron reflectors

Firebacks are the cast iron plates placed at the back of a fireplace to protect the masonry and radiate heat into the room.

Often decorative, they bear designs ranging from simple patterns to elaborate coats of arms or figures: The antique fireback featured a lion rampant.

Fireback also names several species of Southeast Asian pheasants with distinctive reddish-brown plumage on their backs.
