fire box
Locomotive's burning heart
A firebox is the chamber where fuel burns in a furnace, stove, locomotive, or other heating apparatus.
In steam engines, the firebox is where coal or wood combusts to heat the boiler.
The term also refers to a street-corner alarm box for reporting fires, now largely obsolete.
Usually spelled as one word: firebox.
