fiddlehead fern
Curled spring vegetable
A fiddlehead fern is the tightly coiled young frond of certain ferns, harvested before it unfurls and eaten as a vegetable.
The name comes from its resemblance to the scroll at the head of a violin.
Fiddleheads have a brief spring season and a flavor often compared to asparagus or green beans: We foraged fiddlehead ferns along the riverbank.
