fearmongers

Those stoking dread

Fearmongers are people who deliberately spread alarming information to provoke anxiety or panic, often for political or personal gain.

The term is almost always pejorative—accusing someone of fearmongering suggests their warnings are exaggerated or manipulative rather than legitimate: Critics dismissed the senators as fearmongers exploiting public anxiety about immigration.
