fat tax

Unhealthy food surcharge

A fat tax is a proposed or actual tax on foods high in fat, sugar, or calories, intended to discourage unhealthy eating and offset public health costs: Denmark briefly implemented a fat tax on saturated fats.

The term sometimes extends to any policy penalizing obesity-linked consumption.

Critics argue such taxes disproportionately burden lower-income people.
