box formation
Square tactical arrangement
A box formation is a rectangular arrangement of people or units, typically in military or sports contexts.
Soldiers may advance in a box formation for mutual protection, with personnel at each corner.
In football, it describes offensive or defensive alignments: The fullback lined up in the box formation behind the quarterback.
The shape suggests stability and coverage of all sides.
