escape tunnel
Secret underground route
An escape tunnel is a concealed underground passage built for fleeing danger or captivity.
The term evokes wartime prison camps, where prisoners dug tunnels to reach freedom beyond perimeter fences: The POWs spent months constructing an escape tunnel beneath the barracks.
Escape tunnels also appear in fortifications, safe houses, and the hideouts of criminals or dictators.
