engine compartment

Under the hood

An engine compartment is the enclosed space in a vehicle that houses the engine and related mechanical components.

In most cars, it's under the hood at the front; in some sports cars and buses, it's at the rear.

The term applies to any vehicle with an internal combustion engine: The mechanic opened the engine compartment to check the oil.
