energy crises

Power supply emergencies

Energy crises are periods when energy supplies fall critically short of demand, causing price spikes, shortages, and economic disruption.

The term usually refers to oil supply shocks—the 1973 Arab embargo and 1979 Iranian revolution being landmark examples—but applies to any energy source: The natural gas crisis left Europeans facing soaring heating bills.

An energy crisis may result from geopolitical conflict, infrastructure failure, or policy decisions.
