alcohol dependence

Chronic drinking disorder

Alcohol dependence is a condition in which a person has developed a physical or psychological need for alcohol, typically marked by tolerance (needing more to achieve the same effect), withdrawal symptoms when not drinking, and difficulty controlling consumption.

The clinical term has largely been replaced by "alcohol use disorder," but dependence remains common in general usage: His alcohol dependence cost him his marriage.
